Yesterday I had a phenomenal tempo run. I ran 3 miles at 85-90% max heart rate in under 30 minutes. Exhausting but thoroughly enjoying. You finish and you’re tired but also excited about the accomplishment. What a great feeling. Don’t you love endorphins.
The down side to the run was that my shoulder was still hurting. On Monday I woke from a nap and had twisted my neck really bad. I could hardly twist my torso or my neck. Fortunately it didn’t stop me from getting my exercise in. I ran and swam as usual. On Tuesday/Wednesday my shoulder had also started to hurt, gradually increasing in pain. Wednesday when I went to the Chiropractor’s for my neck I thought that would address my shoulder as well. Thursday my neck and back were doing great but my shoulder was getting difficult to endure.
Yesterday It was sheer pain. I couldn’t stand it. I called my doctor and they recommended me going to emergency or urgent care. I opted for urgent care thinking that the emergency room would keep me locked up for hours. As I’m being seen by the urgent care Nurse practitioner diagnoses my pain as bursitis of the shoulder. To describe this pain - it’s a sharp stabbing pain on the outside of my shoulder making it difficult to do much of anything with that arm. This fits bursitis exactly. There’s a great article at the The Mayo Clinic about this exact ailment and possible treatments.
Now before I went to the doctor I had been taking anti-inflamatories, treating it with heat and ice alternatively, and trying to minimalize use at all costs. The symptoms that the doctor didn’t follow up on that aren’t listed here is the tingling and loss of strength in part of my hand. Use is there but it just feels like there’s no strength. This could actually be a sign of something more but only time will tell that.
As I’m talking to the doctor she explains that if we were at my family practice or emergency room she would give me a shot of cortisone and send me on my way, but since they were an urgent care they had to prescribe an oral medicine. So I shortcut the time to be seen but prolong the time for relief. I won’t do that again.
I’ve been on the medicine for 24 hours now and aside from the pain medicine there’s minimal relief in the arm. As a followup I’m going to see my family doctor the middle of next week. I’m also going to see a swimming coach to help me identify my stroke and proper form so that going forward I’m not hurting myself.
The really sad thing about this is that today is my scheduled long run and I am so tempted to go on the run even though my better judgement says not to. This is the problem with being a runner I suppose.
